Abstract

There are myriad factors that influence our eating habits and behaviors. Some of these factors are due to our genetic predisposition while others are simply the environment in which we exist. To be able to decipher the difference between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, the emergence of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics contributes to a significant role in understanding the interaction between genes and the environment and how these impact our dietary intake, which includes our eating behaviors. Hence, this review explores the biological predisposition and its influence on dietary behaviors and nutrient intake. The emergence of artificial intelligence as a tool to understand and apply personalized nutrition will also be explored and the effect of genes on food choices and food preferences is discussed.
